Wedding Checklist

6-12 Months Before

  • Select the date, time and place of your ceremony.
  • See the minister, celebrant or registrar.
  • Announce your wedding on our FREE Wedding Announcements page.
  • Discuss the wedding budget, who will be paying for what, type of wedding and kind of reception.
  • Decide whether you wish to take out wedding insurance to safeguard yourself against anything that may go wrong.
  • Decide on the style of the wedding:
    • Grand formal
    • Traditional formal
    • Informal
    • Second
  • Decide where to hold the ceremony:
  • Church
  • Cathedral
  • Synagogue
  • Garden/Park
  • Hall
  • Decide on a place for the reception.
  • Get estimates and book as soon as possible.
  • Compile a guest list with both of your families.
  • Order the wedding limousines
  • If you wish to engage professional caterers, do so now.
  • Select and book a photographer.
  • Select and book a videographer.
  • If you want live entertainment, audition and/or book the music, musicians, DJ or orchestra now.
  • Select and book a florist.
  • Start to organise your wedding dress.
  • Choose and ask the attendants:
  • Matron-of-Honour
  • Best Man
  • Bridesmaids
  • Groomsmen
  • Flower Girls
  • Pageboys
  • Ushers
  • Decide the colour scheme of the wedding for the following:
  • Bridesmaids' gowns
  • Groomsmen accessories
  • Flowers
  • Stationery
  • Linen
  • Accessories
  • Either purchase or hire the wedding dress and bridesmaids' gowns, accessories or fabrics. Schedule fittings and delivery date.
  • Inform bridesmaids of any accessories they may need to buy.
  • Ensure groom and party have selected their suits.
  • Discuss your wedding music, together first and then, with the minister and make an appointment to see the organist.
  • Consult a travel agent for honeymoon ideas.

  • 3-6 Months Before

    • Order your wedding cake.
    • Order your stationery, including wedding invitations, envelopes, name cards, thank you cards, cake boxes and table napkins.
    • Please note you only require one invitation per couple or family.
    • Write and address invitations.
    • If mailing invitations ensure to buy stamps.
    • Discuss the Order of Service with the minister and order the printed service sheets, one for each guest. Match to suit colour schemes.
    • If caterers are your choice, discuss and agree on the menu and style of serving. Provide an estimate of the number of guests.
    • Check whether extra staff need to be booked such as parking attendants, cloakroom attendants, etc.
    • Discuss and arrange any signs or extra parking facilities at the church or reception.
    • Choose your wedding rings. Buy them now to allow time for any alterations or engraving that you would like to have. If you don’t find rings that are exactly what you want, consider having them made especially for you. Any good jeweller will do this for you and it is an excellent idea if you want something that is unique, or perhaps, a wedding ring that is designed to complement your engagement ring.
    • Plan and organise a list of wedding presents. Choose a store and register a Gift List.
    • Make an appointment to see your doctor or family planning clinic and arrange any medical or dental appointments that may be necessary.
    • Find out about inoculations that you both might need if you are going on honeymoon overseas and arrange to have them. Arrange visas if necessary.
    • Organise new passport in married name: you can obtain the relevant forms from your nearest main Post Office.
    • Begin organising any necessary changes on all personal documentation if you plan to take your husband's name.  Visit Newlywed www.newlywed.com.au.

    1-2 Months Before

    • Mail invitations and keep a track of who is coming. Chase up any late replies.
    • Record gifts as they are received. Write thank you notes promptly.
    • If necessary, shop for honeymoon or going away clothes.
    • Buy, or decide upon, the shoes you will wear with your wedding gown. Begin to wear them around the house to fit them in.
    • Have a final wedding dress fitting (wearing the shoes you will wear on the day) and check bridesmaids’ gowns.
    • Check that the groom and best man have organised their suits, the ring, honeymoon clothes and passport (if required).
    • Buy gifts for each other, bridesmaids and groomsmen.
    • Arrange seating details at the reception. For the church ceremony you can arrange seating only for the immediate family - in the top pews; other guests are seated by the ushers. Standard seating arrangements for the bride’s family and friends are on the left and the groom’s family and friends are on the right.
    • Visit hairdresser with veil and/or head-piece and discuss ideas for the hair style you desire on the day. Try the style at least once beforehand. Book an appointment for the wedding day or arrange for the hairdresser to come to you.
    • Book a make-up artist. Book an appointment for the day and organise a pre-trial two weeks before the wedding.
    • See the minister and arrange a date for the wedding rehearsal. Notify all the people concerned.
    • If you are having ushers for the ceremony, choose them now, usually one usher for every 40-50 guests.
    • Decide on a MC (Master of Ceremonies) for the reception.
    • If you want someone in particular to make a speech at the reception, ask them now. Be specific about the time length.
    • Book appointments with a beautician for a manicure and pedicure. You may also want a massage and facial.
    • The best man or groom should organise the bucks night out.
    • The matron-of-honour or bride should organise the hens night out.

    2 Weeks Before

    • Confirm the numbers to the caterer as soon as you can.
    • Check if there are any other events in the area on your wedding day so that, if necessary, you can allow extra time for the journey to the church.
    • Time the journey by car on the same day of the week, and at the same time of day.
    • Draw up a schedule of events for the reception and give copies to the groom, his best man, the MC and minister.
    • Make a final check on photographer, videographer, caterer, car hire, entertainment, flowers, cake, hairdresser and make-up artist. Confirm with florist where to deliver the flowers on the day. Confirm where to deliver cake on the day.
    • Try on your wedding dress with all the accessories you will wear on the day including:
      • veil and/or head-piece
      • shoes and stockings
      • lingerie
      • jewellery
    • Select your honeymoon clothes and put them aside ready to pack. Remember cameras, film, sun lotion and contraceptives.
    • If you are taking the car on the honeymoon have it serviced now.
    • Obtain international driving permit (if required), arrange insurance, traveller's cheques and cash.
    • Check that there is a room available for changing at place of reception.
    • Draw up a seating plan for the reception.
    • See that the place cards and all other table settings, including correct linen and decorations are in place.
    • Some gifts will be taken to the reception. Arrange for a family member or friend to take care of these and store them with your other gifts.

    1 Week Before

    • Give the final numbers to your caterer.
    • Wrap all the gifts for the attendants.
    • Place correct fees in cash for the minister, organist, choir etc. in marked envelopes and give these to the best man together with a set of extra keys for the going-away car on the day.
    • Pack honeymoon luggage and check honeymoon arrangements, such as tickets. Give them to the best man.
    • Bride and/or groom have their hair cut or trimmed.
    • Final check with minister.
    • Have wedding rehearsal.
    • Ensure that the matron-of-honour, bride’s mother or some appropriate person is responsible for taking home the bride’s dress and accessories after the wedding. The best man should take charge of the groom’s suit and, if they are hired, return them.

    The Day Before

    • Lay out everything you will require on the wedding day. Place everything in a convenient place ensuring there is enough room to dress comfortably.
    • Organise something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.
    • Prepare going away outfit and accessories. Organise an appropriate person to take it to the reception.
    • Confirm that all members of the wedding party are organised and prepared.
    • Check that groom is prepared and all details finalised.
    • Make sure that car has petrol, oil, water and is in perfect running order.
    • Pack going away clothes and have suitcase delivered to the hotel (reception rooms).
    • If you are not seeing the attendants before you arrive at the church, give them their presents now.
    • Have a manicure and pedicure. Massage and facial if desired.
    • Wash hair, have an early night and relax.

    On The Day

    • Sleep late and have a good breakfast.
    • Treat yourself to a leisurely bath.
    • Have hair and make-up done.
    • Slip on wedding dress making sure that it will not interfere with your hair and make-up.
    • Arrange headpiece, jewellery, stockings, shoes and lingerie.
    • Matron-of-Honour to ensure bridesmaids are ready.
    • Get ready for the photographer and videographer.
